Haldde is the world's first permanent northern lights observatory, built on the summit of Mount Haldde in Alta, 904 meters above sea level. The highest and oldest observatory building was put into use in 1899. The observatory on Haldde was in operation until 1926.

In 1899, Professor Kristian Birkeland convinced the Norwegian Parliament to approve the construction of observatories on Haldde. He spent the winter there himself from the turn of the 19th to the 20th century.

This is a triple-threat experience: Norwegian northern lights history, a unique adventure, and a real challenge!

At Alta Event, we have deep knowledge of Haldde, its history, and the route up, both in winter and summer. Our grandfather was a local guide who transported researchers and their families to Haldde by horse during the observatory's operational years. We follow in our ancestors' footsteps, but we do it by snowmobile and take a different route.

The tour starts in Mathisdalen, Alta, following the public snowmobile trail toward the mountains at Ongajervi. From there, we leave the trail and head up the expedition route toward Haldde. The final leg is more challenging, so this trip is best suited for those with previous snowmobile experience. If you haven't driven before or don't feel confident, you can ride in one of our comfortable, enclosed snowmobile sleds. The final few meters to the summit must be covered on foot.

Once we reach the top of Haldde, we take in the view before heading into the historic buildings for a light lunch and hot drinks. You'll hear fascinating stories about Haldde and life on the mountain between 1899 and the 1920s.

The one-way distance is 37 km, for a total of 74 km. On this trip, the journey is just as much an experience as the destination. You will encounter spectacular nature and beautiful mountains before reaching the summit, where you'll be stunned by the views, the landscape, and the raw power of the surroundings!

Everyone drives their own snowmobile, unless you are riding in a sled or with one of our guides. We provide all necessary gear, including a snowmobile suit, boots, gloves, and a helmet. We serve hot drinks and a light meal upon reaching the summit of Haldde.
